In My Closet {Run!}

I started running about 5 years ago while living in northern Minnesota. My normal route took me along a gravel road that twisted over hills and around marshes and skirted the edge of a sparkling lake; miles and miles, with my faithful yellow lab by my side (not Emmy, but her predecessor Splash). Over the years, I have run on and off, and always recreationally… except for that one stint where I packed a 5K, 8K, 10K, two half-marathons and a marathon into 8 months. That was two years ago, and these days, I keep to short, easy runs with Emmy along the trail near the cottage. For this month’s style guide, I put together a snapshot of my favorite running gear, from head to toe. This is the stuff that I swear by… the very articles of clothing, accessories and shoes that I use on a regular basis.

Designer’s Sketchbook {Sail Away}

Words can’t describe my love for all things summer and anything with a seaside flair. The cottage has a Cape Cod style of architecture, and the interior is full of natural and nautical decor. Thus, this Designers Sketchbook came together quite easily for me, and I even had to stop myself from going “overboard”. Below you will find a smattering of items that inspire daydreams of sailing away on a perfect summer day.

Thrifty Thursday {Garage Sales}

B_5-21-09_1

A sure sign that summer is on it’s way is the presence of a multitude of garage sale fliers tacked to street signs and telephone poles. As a kid, I would often tag along with my mom on weekly garage sale adventures in our small hometown in northern Minnesota. We would map out a route, hit up all the sales, and return home with a hoard of treasures (”junk” to my dad). These days, I’m not a hardcore garage-saler, but I do really enjoy the hunt for a good buy, and when I have the time, I love to browse local sales. I have scored some amazing deals, and in the process, saved quite a bit of cash on everything from furniture to decorating accessories. Below are a few of my favorite garage sale finds!

B_5-21-09_2I purchased these vintage suitcases on a whim several years back. Currently they hold all my sewing supplies and fabric, and sit at the end of bed in our guest room, fitting perfectly with the “vintage travel” theme. The wooden chair on the right was a bargain at five bucks. However, when I first purchased it, it was a dirty, dark brown with splatters of white paint on it. A bit sanding, lots of elbow grease, and a coat of varnish produced this beauty that now sits in a corner of our dining room.

B_5-21-09_3For several years I lived in the quaint and historic St. Anthony Park neighborhood of St. Paul. The garage sales there were killer, always turning up stunning antiques and unique finds. I found this bowl at one such sale, and it was really quite a steal for only four smackeroos! It sits on a ledge between our kitchen and dining room, holding a collection of faux artichokes.
